Hello from an Anglo-Canadian!
Hello friends,
Just find this splendid forum. Really nice to see such a boatload of expats all mingling and welcoming friends abroad.
I was born in Halifax, NS, Canada in 1988 to a mother from Tyneside, and a father from Canada. My mum was born in Newcastle-T. in 1953. Her family moved here in 1957. I've wanted to live in my "ancestral home" for quite a few years, and lately it's become a burning desire.
I'm a tad confused about my nationality, however. I never had a passport that I can remember (although we did hop over the American border for a few days when I was 12 years old), so I can't check that.
Clearly my mum was a British citizen otherwise-than-by-descent at birth; but her passport, as far as I recall, simply says "Canadian". She never renounced her UK Citizenship that she remembers. But the Wikipedia article on UK citizenship, under the "Automatic loss of British nationality" heading, says "British subjects [...] lose British nationality upon acquiring any other form of nationality."
What does this mean? Is my mum a UK Citizen or not? Have I received British citizenship by descent, or not? I'd like to apply for a UK Passport, if I can. Not that keen on spending £1,163 for an application to register though, my goodness. Thankfully there's a British Consulate in Halifax, if that's any help to me... I just want to say hello here first, however, and ask you for thoughts.
Cheers for the forum. I like the way the community looks.

Re: Hello from an Anglo-Canadian!
Hi Georfolk and a very warm welcome to BE
We have a couple of wonderful members who are very knowledgeable about UK citizenship matters, so if you repost your questions here Citizenship/Passports and Spouse/Family Visas (UK) - British Expats I'm sure there'll be help for you to work through the maze
As a new member, could you please have a read of the BE site rules when you get a couple of minutes (actually, one minute should do it, they're short and sweet). If you have any site related problems you can contact one of our lovely moderators, their names are in bold font, lower right hand corner of each forum's index page.
Best of luck with your plans to move to Old Blighty!
