Default Canada or Australia

Hi,

I'm South African born married to an Irish man and living here for over 10 years now.

Just recently received my Irish citizenship and due to the recession are being 'forced' to look for greener pastures.

Still deciding between Australia and Canada. Basically will choose whichever is the easiest due to some indiscretions from my hubby's drinking past. He is now a member of AA for 9 years but unfortunately it is not that simple from I have read on some posts.

Hopefully I will find the info I need on here for us to finally make the final decision and put our limited cash towards our chosen country as we cannot afford to try for both.

Hi, and welcome to BE.

As you're weighing up both options, this Wiki article may be useful - http://britishexpats.com/wiki/Canada_versus_Australia

With regard to your husband's past, the CIC website section on criminal rehabilitation should be able to tell you if he's inadmissible or not - http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/informa...s/5312ETOC.asp

Hope to see you in the Canada forums soon.

Thanks. I have actually gone through this website before but was getting very confused. That said, this morning I read it with open eyes and it's making some sense.

There is a bill being made into law in Ireland (hopefully soon) that they will expunge 2 of your convictions. Hopefully we can plead with them to get rid of the latest ones as opposed to the oldest ones and maybe they can consider the drug convictions as one. Worth a try.

That won't make any difference to Canadian immigration though - it's Canadian laws that count for that, not Irish ones. So just because something is 'spent' in Ireland won't mean that you don't have to declare it on your visa application and/or possibly get criminal rehab if it's required.

But hopefully you can get rehab if it's needed, and proceed with your application. One other thing I should point out, as you've said you're being forced to move abroad because of the recession, is that you may not find it any easier in Canada to get work - the economy there isn't great either, and without that all important 'Canadian experience' it may be tougher than in Ireland.

It will depend on what you both do though, and if your jobs are in demand - check out 'the list' of eligible occupations for Skilled Workers to see if you may have an easier route in and are in a job that is needed.

Good luck.

both nice countries. Clmate wise Oz is probably more reminiscent of SA if you're looking on a similar lifestyle, but Canada has pretty warm summers aswell and closer to Ireland. You might be dissapointed with both if you're looking for 'Greener Pastures' to the emerald isle. I'm not sure anywhere in the world is much greener than those!!

We actually have decided to proceed with an 'Application for Criminal Rehabilitation' anyway to be on the safe side. Hopefully it won't take up a year to process but if it does 'Cie la vie'.

Hubby is a plumber/ gas fitter who specializes in Renewable Energy so hopefully workwise we will be okay. I haven't worked in 6 years due to raising a family but would like to study further to become a Medical Secretary.

Truthfully I couldn't handle the heat is SA but after 10 years in Ireland I'm longing for it. That said, I also like to have seasons (Ireland not very good with those).

I was well aware of the irony when I said 'greener pastures' but I was too tired to rephrase it at the time.

Good luck with the rehab application, they do seem to be quite quick at the mo so hopefully it won't be anywhere near a year.

And if he specialises in renewable energy then I should think he'll have no trouble finding work at all - that's what my husband does too (although on the management/project side of things) and the industry over there is pretty healthy, although does seem to have quietened down a bit since we've come back.

Hi Lettie, Your husband would probably do well here in London and the south east right now. London has a strategic plan that insists on all new development achieving 25% reduction in co2 emission so basically every new home/development needs to achieve this. Despite the negativity elsewhere in the economy, development here is picking up pace and there's mch demand for renewable energy specialists at the moment.

Just in response to your original question gasfitters/central heating specialists probably more in demand in Canada than OZ

Hi,
Australia is probably more lenient, and certainly easier to deal with, in the conviction area than Canada, from what I've read on here. Aus doesn't require waivers etc to be applied for. Have a look through the Australian Immigration forum and you'll find a lot of threads from people with convictions of various types
Then the Dept of Immigration website www.immi.gov.au will help you work out if you qualify for a visa

Still confused re the above. Surely if it is expunged/spent it won't show up on a criminal check?

What is the point of getting it expunged if you still have to declare it?

Ireland is doing this to help people move on and be able to get jobs without having to declare criminal records.

I would think (hope) this would pertain to the 'immigration' as well.

We are trying to emigrate on a budget. We are officially unemployed at the moment and the dole gets you so far so can't afford for rehabilitation to start getting expensive.

We really do not want to live on the 'system' for the unforseable future and are desperate to go and don't want any hold-ups but if that is what we have to do I guess the sooner the better.

We had been gearing up for Australia since June 2011 as we thought we had no hope in hell of getting into Canada but when we heard they were going to allow convictions to be expunged we thought Canada would be the easier option for several reasons.

1. We don't have to fork out a few grand to get his skills assessed before even getting a visa.

2. He has a sister in USA so thought it would be easier for his young/elderly parents to kill 2 birds with one stone. (Before anyone tells me the vast distances between USA/Canada; I am aware of them but it is still better than USA/Australia) We quite possibly wouldn't see his sister again for many many years if we moved to Australia.
