Default British Expat driving in UK and Europe?

Hi, Will someone please let me know if they have had the same experience my Australian friend is having and if they were able to resolve it:-

He is a Resident in Sydney with family in Scotland UK. He will be visiting Scotland this year and hopes to buy a Motorhome in UK to travel around there and Europe. The Motorhome is an American RV 26ft long 6.5 Engine and just over 7tonn. After his travels he intends to store the vehicle in Scotland UK and return to his home in Australia.

The UK Driving and Vehicle Licencing Department in South Wales UK say he can drive in UK and Europe on his regular Austrilian Driving Licence, but he cannot find any Insurance Company either in UK or Australia who will Insure him to do so.

If any one on this site have been able to secure Insurance to drive over in the UK when visiting your family or any other reason, would you kindly inform me of the Insurance Company you obtained the Insurance from please. With hope and my appreciation.

Friends of my parents used to to do this regularly, As far As I know they arranged for a family member (UK resident) to actuallly purchase the vehicle and then put the Ausssies as named drivers. They usuall sold the vehicle before returnung to OZ

Hello and welcome to the site.

I had the same problem when I tried to ensure a car a few years ago. The only company that would insure me as a non UK resident was called Wise Owl. As stuboy said the alternative is to get a relative to purchase and insure the vehicle naming you as a driver. Make sure the insurance company is aware that you are a non UK resident...and get authorisation of such in writing.

Hi Jerseygirl

Thank you for your prompt reply, We will be contacting Wise Owl asap and keep our fingers crossed, its the first ray of light we have had.

If we are not successful there we shall be looking to the idea of help from the Scotland family, so all is not lost yet. Thank you again.

I have never had this type of Dilemma as such, but try sending an email to a company called MORE THAN who are underwrtten Royal Sun Alliance - they tend to be one of the better companies around for flexibility so may be willing to underwrite your friend.

It may also be worth contacting RAC and AA to see of they can help as I do know they offer roadside assistance for motorhomes and stuff.

Good luck

Hi Thank you for your kind emal. Ill be onto MORE THAN, promptly, as you say they hopefully will be flexable, this is what has been missing on the numerous companies we have been contacting this past month.

Iv been in touch already with RAC and AA, the RAC guy hopes I will let him know if Im successful, ( theonly one to be interested enough to ask me that) which I hope I will be doing soon.

I will let you know too, its incredable in this Modern World citizens just cant interchange with Major Countries for Vehicle Insurance. You would think we are asking to go to the Moon.

Thanks again for taking the time to help me.

No it wouldnt.
You have to have a company to do that.

Might be an idea to check out the UK Caravn & Motohome Club as they have an insurance specially for Motorhomes

Failing that, if you are over 50 then SAGA, as they have been known to insure non UK residents

There is also a company called Insure and go.
I don't know whether they do vehicle insurance, but they do specialise in long term travel insurance needs so a check of thir website may be worthwhile

No-one is "IN Charge" on Planet Earth, last time I woke up my friends. I am "Self-Employed" yet I do not have a business and don't even get dressed some days. I can have a Company Car if I choose to have a company car.

Even the cat can have one, should I choose to say so...

Speaking from a legal practitioners point of view, I think you will find that claiming a vehicle as a company vehicle when there is no company would fall into the realm of insurance fraud, so that is not a recommendation I would make to Sjkirk. Of course in such circumstances as you describe, you can add business use to your personal motor insurance policy should you be using the vehicle for business purposes apart from travel to and from you place of work which is covered in the personal policy.

Must say you have an amazing cat if it can drive a car !!!

Yes, you can have a company car if you have a company. A company motorhome might be questionable. If you know anything about company vehicles then no doubt you will know that they are taxable. It is a rather silly and expensive way of attacking a relatively simple problem, bearing in mind the person involved is an Australian resident and possibly citizen.

Good luck with your cat, by the way ......... I should get it a purrgeout
