23 yr old graduate web developer looking to move to US

Hi Everyone,

I am a 23 year old looking to move to america at the end of this year with my u.s boyfriend.

We met in england and he is now finishing up his university degree here in England and we want to move to US toward the end of this year. I am a Web Developer currently full time employed in my profession and carry a BSc Hons Degree in Internet Computing. I am currently looking at my options of finding work over there but i'm really not feeling to hopeful! We are looking at Rhode Island to start off. I'm looking to see if anyone could give me some advice and guidance as to what options i have etc as my partner has to be out of England by October so we are starting to get very anxious about our future! I'd appreciate all the advice i can get!

Thank You in Advance!

Hannah

Hi Hannah, and welcome to BE.

I'd suggest you post in the US immigration forum (further down the page) where the wise folks there will be able to advise you better. And I'll make a small bet with you that every person that responds will just tell you to get married! ;)

Unfortunately, as you are no doubt aware, getting an employment based visa for the US is incredibly difficult unless you have specialist skills that will make it worth any employer spending the thousands of dollars to sponsor you, as well as waiting months for you to be able to start work.

Have a read of this which will give you an overview of your options - http://britishexpats.com/wiki/Pulaski's_Ways%3A_How_to_Live_and_Work_in_the_USA

I wish you the very best of luck.

:)

Hi Hannah

Welcome to BE.
You definitely need to use Christmasoompa's link and post on the US Immigration forum to get advice from those in the know. On that forum you will also be able to chat with other Brits who have already managed to make the move so will be able to give you lots of useful information to help you along.
In the meantime I wish you all the very best with your plans

Dread - x

Options you have are:

Marry and move to the US as a spouse. You will be able to work once you get your Authorisation to work papers.

Find an employer in the US to sponsor you for a work visa prior to moving to the US.

Investment Visa

If you have been co-habiting in the UK you could apply for a B-2 cohabiting visa which can give you up to 6 months in the US and then you need to re-new. You cannot work on the B-2.

There are study visas too.

Thank you all for your advice, I currently rent an apartment with my partner and have done so since may 2010. I will post this in the US immigration thread.

Thanks

Hello and a big welcome to BE.

Excellent information can be found in the BE Wiki, not forgetting the Living and Moving Abroad forum that will help you, another set of great help is the permanent threads at the TOP of each forum, they are very pertinent to that particular forum and makes sensible reading.

Moderators deal with any problems that arise such as inappropriate posts, spammers etc, you will find their names at the bottom right hand side of each forum's index in bold font.

Please contact me if I can give you any further help.

Welcome to BE and good luck!

Though get married and it'll be easy. Other wise, realistically, it just isn't going to happen, especially finding a work sponsor in RI.
