Young family moving from UK > NJ/Hoboken -schools
 

Hi there,

I'm moving to New York/NJ with my family in August next year. My children are 4 (reception UK) and 6 (Yr 2 UK) and i'm having real trouble getting my head around the school system. A couple of questions i'm hoping someone may be able to help with (i'd really appreciate it):

-We will arrive after registration for schools (July) and they will not accept our registration until we have a US address -what happens in this instance?
-It seems like schooling in the US starts a year later than in the UK - we plan to be in the US c3 years, i'm worried that when we return, our kids will effectively be a year behind? Does this ring true?
-Private schools are expensive ($24k/year). Appreciate there is a variance with all public schools, but if moving to what seems like a decent area, would we be OK (schools on a par with good/outstanding UK Oftsed) in the public sector?
-Charter schools- are these essentially like Academy schools in UK?
-Niche -is this best place to research schools?
-If anyone knows Hoboken- looking at Stevens Cooperative (private), Elysian Charter (public), Hoboken Charter (public)
