Young family moving to New York
 

My husband and I are currently considering a move to New York from Surrey, UK. We have three children (0,8 and 9) and the two eldest are in an excellent private school. I have been told that public schools in the US are excellent- is this the case? Would my children get a similar education in a public school compared to a private education here?

Also where is best to live? Ideally we wouldn’t be more than 40 mins from Manhattan, have excellent schools, a house where we can accommodate visitors and have access to great out door activities. I’m happy to be suburban but would like something going on around us! Any suggestions?

Does your husband work for a company that has a presence in the USA and they are asking him to transfer? That would be an L visa.

The reason we talk about visas first is that it's difficult to move to the USA if you don't qualify for one of the limited types of visas. And if you can't get a visa, all the talk of where to live in the USA becomes moot.

So the first thing to do is find out what visa his company intends to sponsor him for, then we can help you with logistics of the actual move.

And the second question, where in Manhattan would your husband's office be located? If it is downtown, the recommendations will be to look west to live in New Jersey; if it is midtown, the recommendations will be to look north to live in Westchester Co., NY, or Fairfield Co., CT. All these places are within commuting distance of NYC, and many towns have excellent public schools.

The OP mentioned private schools...so I imagine senior management L1.
