Stop being so high and might about it, it gets a little obnoxious.

You're also not helping yourself with that kind of rant for the gun thread either.

There's no need to be all yeehah and gung ho because no one gives a shit for that public display, people get on and deal with it how they deal with it, without needing to shout about it from the roof tops every five minutes.

Almost every place here will do an oil change for under $20. I did it myself last 2 times and it cost more. I now have 8 gallons of used oil to get rid of, and 2 gallons of un-used ready for next time. I hate to admit, its more efficient to get it done for you.
But as others intimated, its a marketing/loss leader thing, once you get in a garage, they can sell you on tires/brakes, whatever.

Here state law requires any garage that does oil changes takes any waste oil anyone brings in for disposal

Utter crap on the oil change. Synthetic oil will last a lot longer. The Audi recommendation on the R8 is 10,000 miles

Ferraris are 13,000 miles or once a year.

Porsches can be anything up to 20,000 miles.

The 3,000 miles or every 3 months thing is an utter con. Things are made better than that these days. Aftermarket reliability is too big a deal to manufacturers these days to be trying to screw you over.

At the end of the day, the choice is yours, Some people wash their cars only once a year and that's hard on the paint. Winter driving takes it's toll on the oil as the engine takes longer to warm up on short trips. If you change your oil just before winter and then again when winter is over you're basically covered.

I think you're right. We use a Kwik Kar place, and they try to upsell you every single time. Once tried to get me to change the rear diff even though their own printout showed it'd been done 5000 miles earlier! Just have to learn to follow the advice we give the kids on drugs - Just say no! This place does a free wash and valet with every oil change, so I just go in when the trash inside is hindering my view through the windscreen

My truck has an oil life readout on the computer...I took it in to get changed this week, about 7000 miles from last change and it was still reading "49% life left". No idea how it works, but whatever it does, that makes it a whole lot more than 3000/change.

As for reliability though, my truck seems to have missed the memo. Only got it last June, its got 14k on the clock and its already had a new controller for the turbos (6000 miles), a new servo motor for the retractable steering wheel (10000) , and just got it back today from getting a new drive shaft on....pretty impressive huh!

This way, even regular dinosaur oil is around $40 odd once you add in the tax, disposal tax and environmental green fee to the garage. Sometimes can find it for less on a deal...one place is doing them for $20, but the small print is for small cars, so you get charged full price for needing 4 quarts, so that's pretty much everything above a lawn mower

We normally time it for when visiting the folks up in Maine and get a lube shop to do it as the synthetic is around $35 up there.

Our car gets a right shitting fit if we go 10K....the oil light starts to stutter on hard bends when you hit about 7-8K, so us and the Saab, 5K is about right and safe. Unfortunately

These winters do munt the shit out of the engines though.

Just looked at the manual (PDF ) and it does indeed say 3,000 for schedule B and 6,000 for schedule A... the latter basically being a profile of driving 10+ miles per trip on a not-too-warm nor too-cold day, in non-desert air. Schedule B it is then .

But anyway, when he looked at the oil he said it looked fine "but change it soon". He doesn't do that sort of thing so there's nothing in it for him. Anyway, garage can do that for me, sod messing around with mucky oil when I haven't got a clue what I'm doing - I couldn't even get the bonnet up on the new car today!

Mobil 1 every 10k miles, our Accord is at 242k and still running sweet as a nut. . Granted, winter aren't as harsh as further north, so that helps, but for modern vehicles 3,000 miles oil changes are an utter waste - do them if you want, they'll do no harm, but they're a waste of time and money. Even our local Honda dealer has quit harassing us to do them every 5k.

We're taking my Suzuki to the dealership for our first 90 day free service on Monday. It has only 528 miles on it. According to hubby the manufacture's recommendation is an oil change every seven months or every 7200 miles. But taking into consideration the harsh winters we have here he has decided to go with my fathers advice and get it done at the dealership again in the fall and thereafter in the spring of 2014. That is our choice and it's left to everyone else to decide what they wanna do, really He follows my Dad's advice on his own Chevy Silverado which is older. Works for us,
