The story had it that when Fort Irwin was established, it was placed where it was because one could aim an artillery piece in any direction at maximum elevation without fear of actually hitting anything and causing damage.
The weather at the post was interesting -- to quote Robin Williams in "Good Morning, Vietnam" it was "hot, damn hot" but it was NOT "wet."

I too am in SD. Moved over for my husband's Post Doc. We've been here for almost 3 years. He LOVES it and I know he will cry when we have to leave. I too am happy enough but I think because I know we will be moving again that I haven't really allowed myself to think of it as home. It is so darn expensive here that no matter what we know we will be moving on to find a new 'forever' home. Probably not the UK, just somewhere else./
