You get out what you put in here on BE. Rolling up and trying to lay down the law just gets people's backs up. Think of it as a conversation among friends, so you trying to turn it into an interrogation isn't going to work. We don't need much, something about where you'll be moving to and why would help get the ball rolling.

When I moved to the Central Valley - no it was the worst thing that had ever happened to me.
When I moved to the Bay Area - yes. It's the best thing that ever happened to me.

I love it here in San Diego, but I don't live in the city. Torrey Pines beach isn't too far and is probably the greatest beach I've been to (minus the $12 parking fee at a state park??).
We used to live in the bay area and I wish we had stayed there.
It really is a beautiful state with its fair share of problems and a legislature that I often think should just be abolished.
It's expensive and there is no getting around that.
I've been here 15 years and I think 25 ish will do it. I'll take my pension and move back home. Just don't tell my wife that's what I'm planning.
On a side note, it's incredibly hot and a bit miserable right now, roll on the "winter" weather.

Hmm,
I'm a native Angeleno. Grew up in the San Fernando Valley. Part of my Army duty was at the former Fort Ord [near Monterey] and Fort Irwin [go north to Barstow, turn left, keep going 40 miles into the desert until you see a sign saying "Welcome to Fort Irwin" and then drive another 10 miles]. Live in San Francisco during law school and 2 years afterwards.
As noted, the place varies a lot -- it is larger than the entire UK by a fair margin.
Finally settled down in Los Feliz.

".... North to Barstow, turn left ..... " Are you sure? "North, then left" means west, and that puts you on the road to Bakersfield, but Fort Irwin is NE of Barstow.

Yes but if you go into Barstow you'll find a West heading road for Irwin that then veers NE.
Sorry scratch that....the road actually heads North...
(Felt like West when driving through on the old road...but actually north. Still left on the old road though. Wee bit obscured on the sign but you can make it out.)
