When stations are up against the World Series, they show repeats. It just happened that the World Series finished a little earlier than expected

"World" Series??? My ar$e. Still, "Blinkered World Series" doesn't quite have the same ring to it....

I read quite an interesting article (which I can't find now) about why this happens. Basically, the "value" of a new episode of a top-rated show on US TV is so high that if there is any chance of it going head-to-head with another high-rated show, and thus losing ratings that week, the network will run a repeat instead.

It seems that the ratings analysis that the whole TV industry uses to judge whether something is a "hit" thinks the public are so fickle that any one-week dip in a show's ratings could result in the show no longer being seen as a "hit" and the network canning it or not commissioning another season.

...which all goes to show that American business models can be as stupid and childish as any in the world. You'd think by now they'd have a neat little computer model that tells them why there was a 1.2% dip in Desperate Housewives' ratings this week, and let it run as scheduled.

Which leads to the obvious question: why the **** would there be an overlap between the target audience for International Bass Fishing or the World Series and Desperate Housewives?

Probably because it's November tomorrow and that is a 'sweeps' month, so all the programmes will be new episodes, no repeats

...because this is American TV? How else do you think broadcasting companies can offer so much "choice"? Do you expect them to make endless new episodes of our favorite programs?

I'll watch that with interest, although I don't think we'll see many choppers getting built, more likely the Teutels annoying the crap out of everyone
