We bought an ex-demo from a local dealer which was really dirty when we went to collect it, despite giving them 2 weeks to prep it, so when the survey came the ratings were low. Whilst we were waiting for him to get it resolved the salesman told us that he'd never had less than 5 star reviews to which we replied shame you won't get that from us...... he didn't try to argue.

But in the UK they aren't allowed to negotiate the price anymore are they? I know a relative of mine tried to, there's some law that prevents them from doing it.

I've had salespeople up front in Canada try and tell me to give them good reviews before they've even started the sales pitch, it's a joke.

Last time I bought a car I drove up to the dealer in Red Deer who I have to say was fantastically better than the dealer in Calgary. They gave me a way better deal without acres of bullshit. The lesson I learn from that is - if you're going to buy a new car, go to a small town where they appreciate the business more.

The thing that gets me is that I have my car serviced in the US occasionally so I have the US dealer constantly e-mailing me, mailing me, texting me, phoning me to trade in my old car for a new car and come in for a service, etc.

They always get the service date wrong because they think the mileage is in miles, but it's in km. I asked them about buying a car but their franchise agreement won't let them sell to Canadians.

Sigh. The stupidity burns.

Oh yeah the dumbest comment I've had so far (of many) from a dealer in Calgary was when I mentioned that I bought new tires in the US. To which he responded they were inferior because they weren't Canadian-spec. Literally the only difference is a US DOT mark on them and they were registered with the NHTSA.

It's reflex, they just spout this crap.
