True they are getting better again now but have suffered tremendously over the last 5 years or so.And in reality they are the same as Jeep - as its all the same company now

get a 3k loan, finance the rest through patelco at a good rate over 2 years and get your self a nice BMW 3 series

If thats your priority then steer away from the Jeep - although they hold their value pretty well. Before we got the Jeep I picked up a 2 year old Hyundai Elantra for about 5k with 12k miles on it as a second car! Got over 6K when i traded in it. Ugly thing and pretty dull - but quiet, reliable and cheap to run (though the ins on the Jeep is cheaper) so something like that might be worth looking out for?
Or you could get a Focus at that money - but the US ones are made in Mexico and apparently arent a patch on the European ones!

Having said that if I do stay longer then I will probably treat myself to a nice big truck.

I owned one in New York...for a short time...it got stolen
found it to be an excellent mode of transport...especially in the winter (I had the soft top) snow...
$6K is actually a decent price too...if you want a Jeep
Reliability - 3/10
Comfort - 3/10 (but you don't buy a Jeep if you want confort)
Economy - 1/10 (again, don't buy it for the gas milage)
Depreciation - 9/10 (these babies hold thier value like an Rembrant)
Safety - 5/10 (they have a habit of rolling at high speed)
Security - 1/10 (with a soft top) 2/10 with a hard top ...they will always be very attractive and easy to steal
But most importantly...FUN - 11/10
