We arrived with just 4 cases and shipped over about 6 boxes of personal things. We sold all the furniture in our house in England (mainly to the in laws) and bought everything new when we got here. The furniture back home wasn't anything pricey and I have to say we haven't bought anything too pricey here. I'm a Target and Ikea girl, I actually also picked up some stuff from expat friends who moved back to the Uk. You can do furniture rental packages to get you started and some give you the option to buy the furniture too. Good luck with the move

We arrived with just 2 suitcases each. The stuff we had in the UK was not high value enough or in good enough condition to bother shipping. We have both left some sentimental boxes with our parents along with some wedding presents which were just too heavy to ship. we plan on getting them here eventually when people visit. We saved as much as we could before we left and bought furniture etc when we arrived gradually. It was stressful but a lot of fun!

We originally only planned to ship small, personal stuff like CDs, pictures, kitchenware, clothes, and that was about it (250 cu ft). But when we couldn't sell the 4-piece suite, we ended up shipping that for an extra 800 pounds. We'll be without that suite for at least a month while it sails over the Great Pond but fortunately we have relatives here who are lending us sofas and other bits and pieces. Some stuff here is really cheap; other stuff is not cheap. For example, I've not seen a power strip for less than $9.99 (+tax); in the UK you could get one for half the price. But I got a cheap table for my PC for $25. So it all varies.

Don't forget beds are different sizes here so either bring your sheets and duvet if you ship your bed, or just buy a new bed here. We've been looking at California Kings for anything from $300 to $1200+ for the frame and $500 upwards for a decent mattress.

Have a look at business class flights - even if only for one of you. Although I upgraded with mostly points and some cash, the amount of extra baggage I was able to bring more than paid for the difference. The extra cash (over an economy seat on the same flight) I paid was 290 pounds and for that I was able to take four 32kg bags and two carry-ons, compared to two 23kg bags and one carry-on in economy - this was BA.

Most of my space was taken up with clothes, some music equipment, cds and small personal possessions.

WOW!!!

Although I guess thats better than a few thousand for part of a container...

I have to agree with most of the others to be honest. We sold most of our furniture, we didn't have many expensive items anyway, and bought new when we arrived. Another thing I've done is, we bought a cheap sideboard off Craigslist, I think it cost $30. We also had an IKEA dining table which we did bring over as it wasn't that old, and our friend over here gave us 6 dining chairs. I've just revamped the whole lot, by painting everything expresso, putting new handles on the sideboard and recovering the chairs. Now everything that was a mish mash, is all matching and looks like brand new furniture. Craigslist can be a great place to pick up some good, cheap items and do a re-vamp on them. The whole dining room to re-vamp cost me $25 for the paint, $8 for the poly to finish it all off and $19 for the material for the chairs and what I saved there, meant I could splash out on a gorgeous chandelier that just finishes it off!!

Good luck with your move, hope everything goes okay :fingerscrossed: :D

Don't forget Craigslist. Lots of good furniture and other stuff there that people simply want to get rid of. Free stuff too.

I found the rental house, the washer/drier/fridge, and just now a dining table and chairs on Craigslist. Excellent site once you wade through the drivel.

Living in Manhattan, you wouldn't believe the stuff people throw out on the sidewalk. You could practically furnish a house with free stuff that is discarded here.

Wow- £900 for 13 boxes?? I am thinking we'd probably have more than that... I better get researching these moving companies!

in the process! have been doing a good trade on eBay as the electricals aren't going to workk in the US. Am planning to use eBay and GumTree for the rest, or just give stuff to friends, family and charity

This may be a subject for a different post, but have you or anybody else tried purchasing different cables for some electrics? I'm thinking like the computer... couldn't I just buy a different power cord?

eBay and I are good friends...

Thanks for the tips! Do you remember about how much it was for you to ship the 6 boxes? I can be fairly crafty with packing...

That's a good point... When I moved to the UK I left a lot of stuff at my parents house and gradually brought more and more over. I don't see any reason why we can't do the same. :)

Oh good call about the biz class flights... originally I had been considering cruising over (I'm a travel agent in the UK so can get the cruise for net cost). But if that doesn't work out cost wise that that's a very very good point about the additional luggage allowance.

Do you remember how much it was going to be to ship the smalls before you had to move the suite?

I remembered the beds would be different sizes... I desperately want a king bed myself. We'll finally have a bedroom big enough for one!

I plan on getting in touch with my thrifty/crafty side again. Luckily my brother and Dad are both pretty good at carpentry so I might even be able to con them into making some things for me. I pay well in beer and pizza. :)
