Its crazy, if we could afford an electric and could charge an electric at home, I would get one today. Electricity is nowhere near the cost of gas.

250 miles a week to work and back. I spend about $25 on my little run around.

When I was driving my truck, it was more like $70 a week.

$25 for 250 miles? Is it a hybrid you drive?!
I drive much less than you and spend about £40/week on my old Golf.

1.4L mazda Protege. It sups gas and it's $2.60 a gallon here in GA.

Helps that it's like a little go kart and weighs nothing

Total dollars? …. Well the price varies a lot, especially on the West Coast, compared to the South, wouldn't gallons be more use than dollars? Or miles driven even more so? Knowing than I put $20/month in my truck won't help you very much as you don't know what mileage it gets, nor how much I pay for gas.

FWIW we currently spend around $90/mth on gas, but that is about 60% in my wife's car, about 30% in my car, and about 10% in my truck. In the past it has been almost $200/mth when the price of gas was higher and I drove my truck more.

I think the best rule of thumb for an "average" person (and obviously there is a lot of variability) is that you will spend about as much on petrol in the US as you do in the UK, but you will pay a lot less per gallon and drive 3-4 times further and/or drive a less fuel efficient vehicle. That was certainly true for me, going from a purely weekend driver in the UK, driving for weekends away, often to Gloucester, but who commuted to work using (only) public transport, to living in a semi-rural location in the US, and driving to work. In the early years I carpooled to work with my wife, and without that, we would have spent twice as much on petrol.

And that's where the homework helps - getting a car with a relatively similar fuel efficiency, knowing that 2 miles from my office across the border in Alabama I can knock 20c a Gallon off, I have reduced my spend vs. what I did in the UK and slightly increased my mileage - As other mention, you do drive a lot more if you were used to living in a sizeable Town, although my location means far less time wasting duel in queues of traffic.

We go no where and have minimal commute, but still end up doing 10-15k miles a year. I work from home, the missus about 4 miles away. One car.

At the mo, now it isn't curling season, doing about a tank a week, around $30-35. Double that at least during curling season.

When I lived in Oxford, a tank of petrol could last me a couple of months or so, as I took the bus everywhere, or if heading to the town centre, I cycled. Partly because it was easier than dealing with parking, but also because it was so easy to do it most of the year. No option to do that where I live now.

$60-$150 per week dependent upon the proximity of work sites that week, if fuel economy matters to you don't get a truck! 12mpg sucks (and new tyres are bloody extortionate too)!

Why did this thread suddenly morph into the 'price of gas' thread?

You bought the wrong truck if you’re only getting 12 mpg. Mine (when it was in one piece) got at least 17-19 and sometimes 20-21

Mine gets much better when it's used as a leisure vehicle, the full carry rack with a couple of stepladders on it knock the proverbial out of my mileage numbers and the cabin and bed are loaded with tools which doesn't help. And I like V8's....
