In the UK we used 'Drontal' to regularly worm our dogs.

What's the equivalent out here? I'd like something that doesn't cost the same as the national debt of a small Pacific island (judging by the rip-off price here of FrontLine).

The worm preventative is in with the heartworm treatment. Your dogs are on heartworm stuff I assume?

... if they're not, then you need to get them to the vet ASAP. They will need to do a blood test to check that there is no infection already present, then tell you which tablets are best for your dog. No doubt they will try and sucker you into buying a whole year supply, but if you only get a few then you can shop around to see if you can get them anywhere cheaper...

I believe prevention (at practically any cost) is cheaper and better than a cure for heartworm. It is mosquito transmitted so difficult to avoid and present in every state of the US.

This is absolutely right. It can be a very tough cure if they already have heartworms and it is terminal if left untreated. Hopefully though you already have them on heartworm preventative and also mosquito's aren't a problem yet. (I know you haven't been here long).

I buy a years supply for both flea and heartworm all in one, Advantage Multi, (a topical treatment) and shopped the internet for the best price. Heartworm meds are prescription so you have to go through your vet for the prescription.

We're in Phoenix too, our dogs are on Heartgard Plus which is a chewy heartworm preventative - it's on prescription and it cost us $46 per dog per year from our vet, which we didn't think was bad. Don't know if they charge more for the higher dose ones for larger dogs, but it's definitely a good idea to give them this stuff as heartworm is a terrible thing for them to get.

You must be getting a very good price from your vet. The cheapest on the internet is about $56 for a years supply for the smallest dogs and about $87 for the largest dogs.

Wow... yeah, we must have a good vet! I figured it would probably be cheaper on the internet but never looked into it. Our dogs are in the small dog category, so it looks like we're saving $10 per year per dog buying it through our vet.

Off topic, but we also have to buy eye drops for one of our dogs and they're $17 from the vet but $30+ online - so I guess our vet is very good!

You must have an outstanding vet. I purchase flea and tick control for my cat from the internet since it is about 30-40% cheaper than from the vet but it became non prescription several years ago. Prior to that, drug companies were trying to stop web sites from selling their drugs.

Maybe prescription meds are more expensive from the internet since they may be dealing with the gray market (drug manufacturers prefer that you purchase drugs from a vet).

Yeah, that could very well be the case! The only meds I've bought online for one of our dogs is Cosequin DS, a joint supplement for her bad knees - that was much cheaper online than in stores, even when you pay for shipping.

Are you talking about intestinal worms rather than heartworm? If so, why not just have a stool sample tested to see if any parasites are present, rather than giving them medicine they might not need.

Heartworm is very bad as it is expensive to treat and the treatment itself can kill the dog. We adopted a very neglected Newfoundland who amongst other problems had heartworm. She had to stay at the vet's overnight after the first shot to check for reactions and then had to be penned up for around 6 weeks. The cost was around $600

The OP asked about worming his dogs and that medication should be included in the heartworm meds so it is all covered anyway. Mine covers Hookworm, Roundworm and Whipworm plus fleas. Not sure what other worms there are!

To my mind, that's all the more reason to test a stool sample once in a while to ensure that the med is doing its job, rather than giving more medicine for no reason.
