we went to our local Indian store this weekend, was gutted to discover that even though they had a great selection and were cheap, it was just like the Indian stores back home, grotty and out of bloody date..can't imagine how old baked beans must be to be out of date. I wouldn't have fed most of it to my dog, and I don't even have one.

Well, if you'd been shopping there all along, stuff wouldn't be out of date 'cos they'd have to restock more often.

Sell by dates are a fri**ing joke here anyway.....one of my pet peeves....although I tend to ignore them a bit for canned goods as long as the tins in good shape.......saw a documentray once where they opened and ate a can of corned beef from the 1st (?) world war and it was still good, so reckon nothing I come across is likely to be that old.....

I just went to open a pack of breakfast bars I bought at HEB at the weekend, only to find they expired at the end of January... 200FIVE!!!! And HEB is generally the best of the local supermarkets....and yes, its my fault, I should have checked before I brought them home, but to be honest, I never even thought about it for breakfast bars. Anything "fresh" I would.....Kroger butchery is a joke - they wont put packing dates or sell by dates on their meat, even though they have a space for it on the label...and when I ask I always get the "if its still on the shelves its fresh" bollocks.....and half the time they don't even know whether the meat and fish ave been previously frozenor not!! have had a barney with them over the cooked chickens before as well - under Houston health code they need to be sold within 4 hours of hitting the shelves, but they openly admit that they leave them there till they sell, even if it takes all day!

Same near me. Indian restaurant with a little grocery store attached. I always look at the expiration dates on the packaged goods (if they even have that printed. They don't, sometimes). However, the restaurant next door is fabulous and always has Indians dining there which is a good sign (to me at least).

well, perhaps I should change my username to 'not-so-MiniBrit' since Ive put on the obligatory 10lbs since living in the US! but, in my defence:

1) I was living in MA so I needed the extra insulation, and
2) I actually picked MiniBrit as I used to drive a Mini back home a long time ago, one of the old ones, in fact it had moss growing on the roof...
