Working for US civil service?
 

I have read many conflicting sources and even had a couple conflicting responses by from the civil service commission (MI) itself that says I can or cannot work for the civil service, or any government job.

I didn't want to waste my time applying for jobs that I would be non-eligible for so I contacted the Civil Service and I got the response back that I would be eligible as I have a green card. They linked me to this http://www.uscis.gov/files/form/i-9.pdf.

I applied for the jobs anyway, I'll wait and see if I hear anything back or if they discover something wrong.

I have read from many sources that you must be a US citizen to hold a government job unless there are exemptions (no US citizen able for the job) and that you can't be promoted etc unless the same exemptions exist. This makes me skeptical of the response I received. One of the exemptions I read however includes being a citizen of the Republic of Ireland; being from N. Ireland I hold both UK and Irish passports.

Is the requirement of being a citizen circumstantial on the job? Do I need to contact the employer beforehand to verify that I am eligible? Does this differ state to state and at federal level?

Most government jobs that I know of require citizenship. Even the TSA does, it is all linked to national security amd many governmant jobs are 'security' related.

Most federal jobs will usually state that citizenship is a requirement. I'm not sure about State and other levels of government. There are some odd situations where you can as a non-citizen be working for a contractor who is contracted with a federal department and essentially do a job a federal (i.e. citizen) used to do.

This is what I had thought. I am assuming the reply I received is not necessarily correct. The website for the MI CCC has nothing stating you must be a citizen to apply, however this doesn't always mean anything. Any level of government job in CA seems to have in large letter somewhere "MUST BE OVER 18, MUST BE U.S. CITIZEN".

Usually need to be a USC, it'll usually state if that isn't the case.

LPR's can work for the post office. Some states allow LPR's to be cops, but usually those who are eligible for citizenship and have applied for it.
