working after the expiration of EAD and entry to US

A friend of mine is working even after the expiration of EAD. He is going out of US for some reasons for a brief period during Christmas. He will have to come back to complete his education. He is in F1 status. He is worried if he cannot get visa from the consular for the reason that he is working after the expiration of EAD.

Should he need to be worried?
