Oops! GOP Rep's Gotcha Amendment On Drafting Women Actually Passed

I don't know if this will eventually filter down to USCIS but something to be aware of.

If it is passed that women of a certain age need to register for Selective Service than it is a federal law and since the USCIS is a federal agency and requires that men of certain have to have registered, think it would apply to female immigrants too.

The article didn't make it clear what bill this amendment was attached to. Sounds like early committee stage to me. Another article suggests it is the "2017 National Defense Authorization Act" (NDAA is the annual defense budget bill) which originally only asked a study to be conducted.

I have no issues with everyone of a certain age range being required to sign up.

Duncan Hunter Jr followed dadd. His father retired and he ran for his fathers seat. Name recognition and all.

Interesting tid bit though is after he announced he was going to run for daddys seat he was recalled to active duty, so his wife did his campaigning his campaigning for him and he still won with 72% of the vote.

I often wonder how many voters even realized it was a different person with the same name.

Eddie Murphy starred in a film with that exact premise.

Senate Votes to Require Women to Register for the Draft After January 1, 2018

The rapid wheels of politics grind on. The article does note the whole thing may end up being vetoed because it insists on keeping Guantanamo Bay open.

I think the draft is a bit antiquated for a country with a professional army.

The whole Selective Service registration is daft. There hasn't been a draft in more than 40 years, and I can't imagine a war when one would be required as, like most other occupations, the armed services have moved to lower staffing and more technology. The idea that the armed services would have any use for hordes of inexperienced young people who certainly don't want to be there, is utter nonsense!

Maybe there is an ulterior motive.

Some political stupidity, maybe - some Democrats tried to reactive the draft under the presidency of George W Bush as a means to pressure a withdrawal from Iraq and Afghanistan, despite the US military not only having no use for conscripts, they active refuted any interest in being "given" conscripts.

Weirdly it was Carter of all people that reactivated the Selective Service System after Ford terminated it as a response to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. There's a bill going through Congress right now that's trying to repeal selective service.
