We are planning on moving to Maine...can anyone tell me if they are banned there or not? Also if anyone knows the cheapest and easiest way to transport them out. There is no problem with the breed of dog in the USA.

Do you and your mother have the correct authorization to move to the US? for example are you both citizens or do you have the appropriate visas / green cards to live in the USA.
if not, worrying about the dogs is a little premature.

Don't be so sure about that.

What types and breeds of animal you are allowed to own (and how many of them) will vary from state to state and it is possible that individual cities and towns may have additional restrictions.

You're right, I forgot about different state restrictions

however I found this web site about breeders of Staffies in Maine, so I will make the assumption that Maine is OK, but check with the individual city regulations.

I don't see Maine on that list but that doesn't mean that there won't be problems either now or in the future.

Maine is one of the states that has banned Breed Specific Legislation.

Maine is considered one of the "most pit bull friendly states" in the US.

California is in the "other pit bull friendly states" category because it prohibits "Breed Specific Legislation" at the local level except mandatory spay and neuter policies that are allowed to be based on the dog's breed.

Therefore if California is not considered one the "most pit bull friendly states" but prohibits "Breed Specific Legislation" at the local level, I doubt that currently any locality in Maine would be allowed to ban pit bulls.

Hi,

We are moving to NJ with our Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. I am using a specialist pet shipping agent which is costing around £1100. Yes, this is expensive, but with everything else to organise I wanted to hand this to someone else! They have booked the flight and completed all of the paperwork. I have just had to organise a rabies jab and Pet Passport with my vet. Different States may have different requirements in regards to shots that the dogs may need, so you would need to check the requirements for Maine.

It is possible (and cheaper) to organise the flights yourself. You would need to go the the website of whichever airline you want to use and look up their pet policy. This should give you the details you need. I looked at American Airlines, BA and Virgin. I think that BA will only work with a pet shipping agent and not directly with the owner. Our dog is booked on a flight with Virgin.

One point to note is that some airlines have restrictions on certain breeds, mainly the "snub nosed" types such as Boxers and generally will not carry pets if the temperature at the arrival destination is over/under a certain limit.

Sorry, meant to add that if you search the forum you will find quite a few posts from other memebers that have come over from the UK with dogs/cats and how they went about it.

Good luck

Don't know if the OP is renting, but certain breeds can make it more difficult to rent. Again, a forum search will pull up some threads on this.

Check with the State.

Getting the breed into the US might not be a problem, but there might be bringing it into the state.

Either way, with more than one, it will be bloody hard finding a rental. It's hard enough finding a place that'll allow one dog.

Bringing the dogs in might not be too much of a problem, but you will have difficulties with rental properties.

Just something else to think about.

Another thing to be aware of. Chances are, your flying into Boston and you'll also drive up through NH to get to Maine, so you need to check to see if you will have problems bringing the dogs through MA and NH.

Chances are, you might not and even if there were a problem with the dogs, not much will happen if you're just transiting through. The problem might arise about liability, in the event that you get involved in a car accident along the way, the insurance might void the cover or the liability element at least if the dogs aren't allowed. This will probably only be a bigger issue if you're driving a rental, but it's something to consider.
