That's not really true, a mod-chip installation gone badly wrong could screw up a player, but putting codes in on the remote is perfectly safe. If you put in the wrong code, the player just won't recognize it, that's all.

Checkout the Philips DVD-726/727
Around $70-$90 here. Can be made region-free via the keypad (see here - http://www.dvdrhelp.com/dvdhacks.php...hilips+DVD+726). Great thing about this player is that it can play any disc from any region once the simple hack has been applied, and can output in either PAL (UK) or NTSC (US) TV formats. As a bonus it also has component output for an HDTV if you have one!
