wife's EAD status?

Hi,
My wife's EAD renewal filing was confirmed to have arrived at the INS on February 28 and we have not received the EAD in the mail yet (they mailed out the original EAD). I realize it's only been 71 days and they state that EADs can take 30-90 days, but I'm wondering if I can go to the office and ask the Information Desk about the status of the EAD?
I work within walking distance of the INS office so I could walk over there at any time. Does anyone know if you can go to the Information Desk later in the day or if you have to line up early in the morning to find out this status? Will they even be able to tell me anything or will they simply blow me off and say come back on day 90? I'm worried about this now because the 90th day is a few days past the expiration of her current EAD.
I'm also worried about them not talking to me because I'm the USC and she is the EAD recipient, they might only want to talk to her, perhaps?
One good sign is that they had cashed our check about a month and a half ago so I would hope that they have been working on it. I'm concerned that this LIFE Act or whatever it is had a deadline of April 30 and that mobs of immigrants handed in applications then and that all of the other work at the office may be delayed because of this. I hope not!
Thanks,
Matt

They mailed your first one to you, without you going down there at all? What about
the picture they take and the fingerprint for it?

Actually, now that I think about it I may be mistaken. I think it was the AP that they mail out. Perhaps we will have to pick up the EAD? Anyway, they have not mailed us any notice to pick up the EAD. I guess my wife brought in or sent in pictures for the EAD card the first time around, I don't remember her saying anything about fingerprints for the EAD...
But anyway, my real question is, can I (as the USC husband) go to the office prior to the 90 days and inquire at the Information Desk about the status of the EAD. Or am I likely to totally waste my time going there? And this is a bit more specific to folks at Arlington, can one go to inquire any time of the day or just in the morning with the giant queue?
Thanks,
Matt
