During the period of the 50s and 60s things were different. I happened to have lived
during at least part of it. During that period, the work got done largely by
teenagers who worked summer jobs and by even younger kids who pushed the lawn mower
around the neighborhood and cut grass for a few dollars. They were the same ones who
also checked your oil, tires and filled your tank at the gas station. Today's
teenagers are not interested in doing that kind of work anymore largely because of
the prosperity of their parents. Today's teens want to spend their summers in Europe
or Mexico- not earning college money by working on the harvest or at a gas station.
As for watching the children, the MOTHER used to do that job. It might sound novel
now but it really was that way. My mother never had a full time job when she was
married to my step father. She would work part time during school at the IGA store or
the local restaurant but her main job was taking care of us and the house. We walked
to school and walked home again for lunch. There was no "hot school lunch program".
My father went to work at Boeing everyday and the job actually paid enough to support
4 of us and pay for a house and car (yes, people did get by with one car back then).
It was not quite "Leave it to Beaver" but it was close. Today is not like that
anymore. Americans are now working more hours than ever before and almost 100% of
women work too. And since kids and teens are well off enough today (my kids certainly
don't scour the neighborhood for empty pop bottles or lawns to cut) they do not have
to do menial or household work, whome else is going to do it? You NEED the Mexicans
and worse than they need us!

I also lived during the period you describe, but the difference now is I live in an
area that has almost no Mexicans and everybody's lawns somehow gets cut, the grocery
stores are all open, gasoline stations still getting by, we even have two
full-service ones, and we're not having any problems due to a lack of Mexicans.

Let me give you an example of how your kind of thinking falls down. Grass cutting in
my town gets done basically two ways: most people do it themselves or they hire lawn
cutters who is white. The lawn cutters makes a decent living and that contributes to
the local economy. His home isn't dilapidated or has 20 people living in it. One of
the things you didn't mention that partially explains why not as many kids aren't
cutting grass as much as years ago is the prevalence of riding lawn mowers. Many
people have them, so why pay someone? Years ago, few people had riding mowers, so
they were more likely to pay some kid.

FYI, I cut my own lawn with a regular mower. Its mostly only eldery people actually
pay people to mow their lawn.

My point is that nobody NEEDS Mexicans. Without Mexicans maybe we pay a little more
for manual labor, but so what? The upside is we don't have to look at dirty Mexicans,
their broken-down cars, and their crummy houses.

Evidently you don't get around. Here in my part of Pennsylvania, we don't see many
Mexicans. Either are they in the rural parts of West Virginia or Maryland I've been
to lately. We get along find without them.

MYTH: Americans won't do the work that illegals do.

TRUTH: Prior to 1965 when the disastrous Immigration Bill was passed, there was very
little immigration. In fact, between 1925 and 1965, there was even a period of net
emigration out of the United States. During this time, our grass was getting cut, our
meat was being packed, our children were being watched and our houses were being
cleaned. The idea that somehow we suddenly can't run a country without an unlimited
supply of foreigners is absurd.

Those in favor of foreign labor are corporations who are addicted to cheap labor.
They are the ones who are benefiting. But their benefit comes at the American tax
payer's expense when you consider that the American tax payer is virtually
subsidizing the labor costs of the greedy corporations by supplying the illegal
foreign workers and their families with welfare, free education, free medical, WICs,
housing assistance, etc. -- something the corporations won't do.

Americans won't allow themselves to be exploited like illegals do, but they WILL do
the work that illegals do for fair compensation and benefits. If Americans did the
work that illegals do at higher pay, would that benefit the consumer? You bet it
would in the long run. But many Americans who do not care about America's future are
consumers who favor the idea of exploiting illegal workers because it keeps commodity
and service prices down in the short term.
