That's absolutely true - it's the U-6 rate in the U.S which is 15.3 percent. That includes people not in the labor force, but want and are available for work and had looked for a job in the prior year. The measures that are used are a real problem.
In the UK they had this argument back in February because the U6 unemployment methodology isn't used there. The TUC made an attempt at calculating it and they determined the real unemployment rate is something like 6.3 million if you apply U6. I think that's about 21.7% - which sounds too high to me - U6 is usually around 1.8 * U3 (the headline figure).
I have heard that the Spanish unemployment rate might not be as bad as made out because people have a tendency to claim jobless benefits even when they are working and there is a significant black market economy. No idea if that's true or not or what that does to the overall rate.

I live in fl and I am from the uk. I am in my late 20s with 1 child and one on the way. I really am having a strong dislike of Florida and the work ethic- over priced healthcare- small mindedness- lack of flextime pto benefits sick leave and the constant worry if getting ill. They give me 3.5 weeks holiday which includes sick leave. They never go on holiday and I'm lucky to get a week off work and they all look at me like I'm crazy. No family life and overpriced. I don't abuse my work time- I have worked in 3 major corporations and have seen Massive unproductive behaviour but god forbid you're ill or take a full measly 12 weeks unpaid off for the birth of a child. They are generally very against government healthcare and leave. However they are scared of higher taxes but. Prefer higher healthcare premiums some pay $450 for a family policy in my firm. They refer to our maternity system as a handout. It drives me crazy. I am not saying its great back home but man- it is hard here with no family. Hard to work and no retirement age as its due to having a lack of a medical policy at retirement so there are oldies falling asleep at my firm. I have seen some craziness.

I think the sad thing is the companies don't give enough leave for people to travel- most in my company have never left the states and the media fills them with nonsense. It is very hard for me to grasp an argument where the other person gives hyperthectical opinion for countries they have neither seen nor experienced life there. Obama is doing a lot but the resistance is unbelievable. The only ones I know pro healthcare have been on the receiving end- ie list jobs- thousands and thousands in debt or people who are educated and well traveled. I told my husband my biggest fear is my children growing up with this attitude. It's frightening to me. Things are changing little with Obama in as far as pressuring conditions for children- but he has a big fight. I believe this is why Hilary didn't get in- their biggest fear- socialism!!! It's so insulting when they use that word to me. I am hitting these forums looking for where else in the world can we try? Or maybe somewhere else in the states more diverse and open minded than north Florida- it's too old school.

Many people with various pre-existing conditions move to Canada. It depends on what the condition is. Basically, they try to determine whether you would be a danger to the public or whether you would be a burden on the healthcare system.

One honest misconception here is everyone saying the US healthcare is piss poor. The healthcare is world class. You say it's poor because you aren't getting it for free. There is a big difference and it needs to be pointed out. Nothing in America is free. Everyone has to work hard to e a success.

2) Outcomes are horrible given the dollars spent. Definitely NOT value for money.
