I think it's kind of exciting to vote on election day - so I'm waiting for Nov. 4.

I'm just trying to get a minute to go....either way - early or Nov 4th, I really do feel compelled to vote in a way I never did in the UK.

I was in Ohio during the last election (I was visiting my then girlfriend and now wife :) ) .... I went to the polling station with my wife and I was asked by some Bush supporters if I'd be voting for their man. I informed them that I was unable to vote because I was British ......

They stood around for a moment before one of them said....

"erm, ok... well........ God Bless the Queen"

It was funny but it would have been funnier if I didn't think that the royal family are a bunch of parasites

I sent in my ballot, but got it into the mail a little late, so I dont know if its gonna make it there by 8pm next Tuesday, the deadline as it was mailed from Canada.

But I know Obama will win my state, so no worries if the ballots not counted.

Oregon is a vote by mail state - so I sent mine in.
Apparently once the system realises you have voted already, all those annoying phone calls will stop. Also all those waste of paper flyers.

We have only had two of those robo calls (McCain). I guess McCain is comfortable thinking WV will go for him. WV is happy with McCain/Palin to continue blowing the tops off the Appalachian Mountains to get at the coal.

I have never votee early and probably never will....I don't even know if you can in my state (I think you can). My voting site is 2 blocks from my house and you never have to wait in line long....same way when I lived in other part of the state.

Probably because they see it as job security. Many of the men in my mom's family were KY coalminers, and that's how they would look at it.

Remember, you're talking about Clermont Co. folks; they're not the most worldly people in the state. (And I can say that because that's where I grew up!)

Did you hear about a fortnightly newspaper in New Mexico that has ran its next paper Oct 31- Nov 14 with headlines saying Obama Wins!

But its not job security. They had some documentary on telly that said they used to employ 156,000 coal miners in WV but since they have been blasting the mountain tops they now only employ 17,000

I agree, but that is not how it is always viewed. Appalachian folks have their own culture and values and a lot of what McCain stands for is part of that. It's very different, and kind of hard to explain without upsetting people. I've experienced both worlds, and I can appreciate why they like McCain.

It was really sad to see the homes and towns destroyed because of the mudslides. With the mountaintops gone there is nothing to stop the rain.

That's a shame, but I didn't think the entire mountain top was removed. From what I learned and saw during my years as an AP environmental science teacher, only the topmost portion of the mountain is usually mined. Sometimes after reclamation, it's hard to tell that it ever been mined and it's easier to use the land for farming, homebuilding, etc. If done properly, reclamation can actually improve some aspects of the mountain. (But I've not been to WV in about 8 or 9 years.)
