Default Who say's LA has no culture?

I just got the Hollywood Bowl 2008 season calender in my Sunday newspaper. For anyone new to Los Angeles I would highly recommend it, if you like classical music, jazz, opera, movie soundtracks and fireworks, picnics and wine.
Elina and I used to have season tickets, before we had kids.
The great thing about the Bowl is that you get there a couple of hours earlier with your Trader Joe's picnic and a few bottles of choice wine. It's outdoors, so you can enjoy the warm So Cal weather while spending some quality time with the one you love whilst sipping on an amusing little vintage ( during the concert) and hearing some great music. Not too stuffy, but you will get the occasional twit who will 'shush' you. Reasonably priced at $10 - $20 for less desirable seats.

The calender is here;

http://www.hollywoodbowl.com/#

Highlights for me this year are;

Bizet's Carmen;
http://www.hollywoodbowl.com/tickets...il.cfm?id=3513

Tchaikovsky with Fireworks
http://www.hollywoodbowl.com/tickets...il.cfm?id=3516

Les Miserables;
http://www.hollywoodbowl.com/tickets...il.cfm?id=3534

John Williams: A Hollywood Legend
http://www.hollywoodbowl.com/tickets...il.cfm?id=3551

The Films of Warner Brothers
http://www.hollywoodbowl.com/tickets...il.cfm?id=3553

Sound of Music: Sing a long event
http://www.hollywoodbowl.com/tickets...il.cfm?id=3565

Lots of stuff for Brits too including Eric Idle's ' Not the Messiah'. Julie Andrews and Elgar's Enigma variations.

Highly recommended if you are new to Los Angeles

I'd *love* to see Denyce Graves as Carmen!!

But the programme leaves out rather vital information......... who is singing Don Jose...... and Escamillo??

Anyway, I'm going to be in London, so will have to pass

Dunno, but I'd say it's worth a visit for $20 - $30 a ticket, and a nice picnic in the warmth of the Hollywood Hills at night.
Must try to get a babysitter

Oh yes - absolutely! Carmen is beautiful, and Denyse Graves is likely to be excellent.

Picnics whilst listening to concerts brings back memories of Kenwood........ it's been many years since I've been... Unfortunately it's had some problems in recent years, and this year's programme looks decidedly lightweight:

Hi:

And take the Metro Red Line to the Hollywood/La Brea Station and take the shuttle up to the Bowl. Do take a sweater, it does get cooler once the sun goes down.

Have you been to the Disney yet?

I'm starting to think you have shares in LA Metro line

No I've drove and looked at the building but haven't been to a concert yet. A night out means an extra $60 - $80 for babysitter fees as we have a 4 and 2 year old.

Les Mis sounded good until I saw that Rosie O'Donnell was performing.

LL. Don't you want to go? Didn't you have a thing for Rosie back in the day?

I'll stick with the memories of having seen it in London's West End, thank you.

We saw the Catherine the Great exhibition there from the Hermitage and the 'Splendors of the Ottoman sultans' in 1992 . I know the exact dates as we have framed posters from them in our dining room.

The Catherine the Great exhibit was really good, had her carriage, jewelry, clothes and paintings.
