Default Where to get British Beer!

Hi folks,

I'm new to this forum, so maybe this has already been asked before but does anyone know of a way to get some of the mainstream British beer in the US? I've been here for 7 years, and still can't find anywhere selling beers like John Smiths, Worthington etc.

Seems that you can get Boddingtons and Bass, but they taste nothing like the real deal. I live in Colorado, and we have some pretty good micro-brews, but still nothing as good as British beer!

Thanks!

So you posted an intro thread in the meet and greet US section?

Thanks, I just posted in the meet and greet!

We do have a great Irish pub in town, but I wish I could find a liquor store that I could buy some cans of the good stuff. I lived in DC for 5 yrs, and did find one place that I could get pretty much any beer - fantastic.

A buddy of mine from NYC just moved to London, and he said he was blown away by the amazing beer - he said that even the worst dive bar in London had better beer than the best bar in NYC. Well, so he says ;-)

Beer availability varies widely from state to state based mostly on the local alcohol laws.

I've seen Old Speckled Hen here but not Worthingtons or John Smith though to be honest I'm not much for bitter ale (I'm a septic give me the cider everytime!). I'll try to have a look out next I'm at the store.

And of course, my favourite, the lowly PG Tips and Yorkshire Gold.

The simple answer is that you can not.

Sort of begs the question what is British beer, no such thing that I know of

You can get English styles, actually theclosest I have come across is Lefthand Jackman, which is actually described as an American Pale Ale.

In can/bottle format you can get most things especially in CO. My small town local offie has Greene King Abbott for example.

Actually I believe I have a can or two, but usually do not bother as I am not a big fan of bottled beers and the Micro Beers here are pretty good, but different.

Yeah, the beer is good in CO (but different) - my favourite is Fat Tire.

Not really sure where to start on that statement, so I wont.

Most of the UK beer is imported by one of the following companies. I'm sure if you do a search you can find their websites and which states they distribute to.

Barton Beers, Ltd.
Artisanal Imports, Inc.
Merchant Du Vin, Inc
Brands United International, Inc.
Eurobrew
Thames America
Legends Ltd.
Shelton Brothers

If they do distribute to CO then most specialist beer shops will be able to get it. CO is one of the beer hot spots of America so I doubt you will have too many problems.

The last time I was in CO (Evergreen) I had some Moose Drool Ale at the Little Bear Saloon. Admittedly not what we're used to at home, but drinkable.

Sweet... thanks! I looked at the website, and they have a pretty good selection. I think I'll go over there after work tonight and see what I can get!

Thanks again,

Lefthand is worth a visit if you are going through Longmont.

To be honest I can not think of an offie that does not stock some UK sourced bottled or cannerd beer around here, well none that I have been in.

http://www.liquormart.com is probably the biggest in Boulder. Have not been in there for some time but they certainly had a very wide selection.

Did you ever go into the Brickskeller pub on N W 22nd street DC just behind Dupont Circle? Back in the 70,s they had over 500 different sorts of beer. Here in AZ most supermarkets sell British beers such as Bass, Worthington,Newcastle Brown,Guinness, bottled cider etc and there are a few bars that also sell British beers.

Yeah, I did got to Brickskeller a couple of times - though for some strange reason, don't remember it that well! But, great place. DC had some really cool bars, I went to see some England games at Fido (not sure how you spell that) - there would be loads and loads of Brits in the bar!
