Any place within 20 miles of the coast in California is not hot during the summer but very mild. Also unlike the east coast, humidity is not a problem since the wind comes from the north while it comes from the south on the east coast.

Say I did decide to live in the U.S.A. (yes i know it's far from easy but ignore this for now..)
I would want this:
1) Good house. 3-4 bedrooms. Big garden. Maximum $300,000. Near schools. Kind of semi rural. Not in a city but not in the sticks either.
2) I hate extreme heat. Must have cold, snowy winters.
3) Great area for children (the whole of the USA seems to fit this really)
I have been to Chicago many times I love it....A bit too "city life" for me. But generally it's nice.
Anywhere better than this that fits my criteria?

On another note I can't see the point of this thread to honest, NO VISA NO SHOW.....why pick a top 10 when you have more chance of flying to the moon

We are talking Central Coastal California in August for Christ's sake. Freezing doesn't even enter into it in January.
Winter jacket...pffut..we would be wearing shorts and t-shirts

But what makes me laugh is the number of tourists you do see in t shirt/shorts complaining about the cold; I mean a couple of minutes research would tell 'em that a southern Californian summer it ain't.And it has been cold enough this month to have had the heat on in my apartment several evenings.
