When can I apply for a SSN?
 

Hi

I am moving to Michigan at the end of January 2018 on a J2 visa with my wife (J1). This has been a bit of a rush as we only found out we'll be moving 2 months ago, our visas have been issued so that's one thing out of the way.

I know I can't apply for an EAD until I arrive but I'm unclear on when I can apply for a Social Security Number, is this also once I have arrived in the states? I can't seem to find anything that specifies this.

Any info appreciated.

I believe for J2 you can't get an SSN until you have your EAD. EAD processing time has been upwards of 100 days.

I disagree. I believe a J2 qualifies for a SSN upon entry to the USS. They only need an EAD if they actually want to work.

I wonder what the rules are for obtaining an "EIN" which, despite the name, is not limited to "employers?"

Surely it would be an ITIN for an individual. It's what can be used on individual tax returns.

That may well be the case. OP can certainly try! Maybe try a couple different offices if the first one says no. :rofl:
