Hudson Florida

In the 50s a guy came to Hudson and tried to buy large tracts of land for a amusement park As the guy was negotiating with the State of Florida for the land a group of Hudson dwellers did not want their property confiscated by the State and went to Talahassee to fight the coming eminent domain battle. They were led by a German immigrant, a dissenter of the Nazi Regime who moved to the USA. In court, he stated emotionally that in Germany the government could do what it willed, good or bad. There were less freedoms and rights available for property owners and it seemed to him that the State of Florida was doing the same thing to the people of Hudson. This convinced the State and it told the guy to keep looking.
He did..and opened a park in Orlando in November 1971....
Good old Walt...

I tried to answer this last week, but my phone line was cut whilst was typing away. Seeing as it's been bumped to the top again, I'll try again.

St Augustine Florida: the nation’s oldest city.
The Fountain of Youth National Archaeological Park in St. Augustine is the site where Spanish conquistadors first came ashore in what is now the continental United States. On April 3, 1513, in the season of "Pascua Florida" - as Easter Season is known in Spanish (meaning Feast of Flowers) - Ponce de Leon expedition sighted land in the present locality of St. Augustine and named it La Florida.
Fort Matanzas built by the spanish from 1740- 1742 was proclaimed a national monument in 1924, along with its sister structure, the Castillo de San Marcos. Construction on the Castillo was begun in 1672 and completed 23 years later.
The Colonial Spanish Quarter is a living history museum and illustrates the life of Spanish soldiers and their families in 1740 St. Augustine.
The Alligator Farm
Ripleys "Believe it or not" Museum
World Golf Hall of Fame
and numerous other tourist traps to take your hard earned cash.
