We'd love to do a cross-country drive to say Alaska or the Grand Canyon, but the cost of petrol has meant we'll probably put that off indefinitely. When we lived in TX years ago, we bought a camper van & did a few summer family drives all around the state, as well as further afield to camp in great places like the Ozarks & the Blue Ridge Mts. I guess I'll have to be happy with those memories for now.

I shouldn't complain, because our househunt has taken us all around New England, to some beautiful spots that I never would have thought about.

Cost of Petrol - It's still only around $4 a gallon - Cheaper still in the Midwest.

Compare that with the UK.

True, but my husband's reply is always--sure, but compare the distances in the USA & the UK too!

He says we'll have to save for few years before we drive to Alaska, even if we camp every night along the way.

A visit to Monument Valley, Utah.

A visit to the D. H. Lawrence ranch in New Mexico.

Monument Valley is pretty nice, but you've already seen it in a hundred westerns. If you want to be blown away by rock formations, I would instead suggest driving further north toward Moab. Drive into the Needles district of Canyonlands, and stop at the campground. Put on your hiking boots and go for a long day hike. Even better if you want to camp backcountry, but the permits can be in short supply. Then, if you have time, visit Island in the Sky, and Arches on the other side of Moab. Expand to Bryce and Zion as time permits.(Zion will also require your hiking boots and/or river shoes to see the interesting stuff.)

Unfortunately my hiking days are over, due to a very bad knee injury some years ago. I can manage about 2 hours but that is it.

Happily I did - the penultimate one. Also did see a couple of contrails, at a distance from my office window, and a landing approach

Visit the southwest
Photograph a sunset/sunrise with a Saguaro in silhouette
See the Rockies (I have seen them from the air in Canada but not quite the same as from the ground)
Visit Hawaii
Visit New England
Drive 1,000 miles. Doesn't matter to where, just to say I've done it
Carlsbad Caverns
Move out of Illinois some day
Get pissed again without a seven month hangover
2017 total solar eclipse in Kentucky
Having the time and money to do all these things
