What's the weirdest thing you have eaten in the USA?
Keep it clean please
Every July 4th we go out to my wife's family farm out in the country. Well the first time I was there they made this "stew" which was mostly Chicken and Tomato. It tasted pretty good. After a few bites my wife told me to be careful not to eat any of the buckshot or the small squirrel bones! Turns out that this special stew was something from the days of the depression where they had to use any meat they could. I couldn't eat any more of it due to the thought of eating fluffy tree rat. I found out that one of the freezers was loaded with all sorts of meat, including Deer, Possum and Snake. Ever since then I make sure I see the Grocery store packet that the meat is in before they start cooking.
Anyone else had anything "weird" to eat, either knowingly or unknowingly.

Ice Cream (Yes I know I'm American, but I think its disgusting)
My MIL is here and I swear we have to stop at every ice cream shop there is and it makes me want to hurl. She has to eat it and loves everything that has to do with cream (double cream back in the UK - gag!!)

Seriously though, I don't think eating Squirrel is very good for you. Something to do with all the chemicals and hormones in the animal that makes it so skittish.
My wife's uncle regularly brings back Deer that's he's found dead on the road. He simply hacks off the legs by the side of the road and brings it back home and stuffs into his over-size freezer.

Uck have to agree with the candied yams/sweet potatoes, hate them.
Also had some jelly with celery and other random veg in, which was not what I had expected

I hated sweet potatoes too until I found a good recipe. Really, a lot of it is down to good recipes and a lot of "traditional" dishes rely on tinned bouillon and soups which add a lot of salt and ruin the taste. There's something weirdly American about opening a lot of cans and dumping the contents together, mixing and baking.
