Here's a link to a PC buying guide from PC world ;
http://www.pcworld.com/howto/bguide/...page,1,00.asp#
and another one from Circuit City
http://www.circuitcity.com/ccd/lookL...Oid=105594&c=1
I think the Circuit City guide explains the whole athlon/sempron/pentium thing better.

Probably the question is what do you want to use the PC for? games, surfing the net, email, graphic design.

If you are using it for games, graphic design or quality video editing then you need something with a bit of power and decent graphics card, but if you are just using it for surfing the net, emails, word documents etc then just look for a good deal with the highest spec you can get and it will more than likely do the job.

Seconded - Call Dell who are normally very helpful and will guide you through the process; trying to understand all the terms is unnecessary and will give you nightmares.:)

Just read your other post.

I would go with dell too, I've had several dell machines and worked with them and on the whole they are pretty good.

I forgot this - a long ago stored bookmark:

Sometimes you can get some good deals on there.

Agree with you there. We used to have an e-machine and had constant problems with it. We've had a Dell desktop for a couple of years and also have a Dell laptop now and they've both been fairly problem free.

Look out for Dell's free shipping offers - will save you a bundle.

Another recommendation for dell...

Left my dell laptop in the car last night and it was below zero :scared: , stuck it by a heater to warm it up and its been fine. :)
