I'm still confused (not hard to do though) I still think that texting covers pretty much what twitter offers, ok, if you are 'following' a particular person in sports, TV, etc, then I can see that it might be interesting to see what they are up too 'real time' but surely, it's not that big a deal to google them?
and if it is just friends/family, then why not just text? you have more than 140 characters to use and it is just as 'instant'?
Or, is it more a 'group' thing? are there like groups of accountants, IT guys etc, that pass on relevant information on twitter? Is that what it is useful for?

It can be useful for anything. Technology is what you make of it. I found out that Eddie Izzard is in NYC today thanks to Twitter. I also played #punday yesterday, where you come up with a pun and try to entertain the masses. For some, the idea can be to be entertaining enough to be re-tweeted by someone with a bigger following, but I don't really do that. I like reading funny thoughts that people have. I admit that I'm not normally celebrity obsessed, but it's fun to read what people I actually like and admire have to say, and what interests them. I could care less about Britney Spears, but Demitri Martin makes me laugh, so why not follow him?

Funny! Actually, as someone who has been posting to some kind of message board or another since about 1991, and have made many real life friends through doing so, I'd personally consider BE a niche social networking site.

I'm not in denial as to why I post on here NOW but it is a far cry from why I started posting on BE originally. Or do you not understand the definition of "byproduct"?
