Just buy a prepaid out here. They are available for $18 and up.
If you really want to receive calls from the UK and want to swap your sim card in, you'll be wanting something based off of t-mobile or AT&T. t-mobile has awful coverage in most places. But you're probably best off bringing a quad-band phone from the UK.

No, the LTE phones require a SIM card, unlike the older "world" phones that Verizon used to sell.

No AT&T and T-Mobile have run GSM networks in the US for years. I've been with AT&T/ Cingular for ten years and all my phones have had SIM cards to access AT&Ts GSM based network. They also all worked overseas, which is why I signed up with AT&T, not Verizon or any of the others.
