Hydroponics,(which is a method of growing plants, usually crops, without soil) while a growing market with the 'green movement' is not widely used on a large commercial basis.

You say you manufacture the product. Would you be doing this in the US or bringing in the product from your current manufacturer?
Sorry SanDiegogirl, just noticed your edit.
We have parts for the systems manufactured all over the world - China, UK, Italy, Greece etc. and then we bring them all together in our warehouse. So I wont be manufacturing anything in the US but I'll be taking all those parts that are manufactured elsewhere, putting them together in our US warehouse and then shipping them out around the US. I hope that makes sense?

Update on the situation:

Had a chat with the boss today and was told my starting salary would be around $40,000 and a company car...no medical or any other benefits to be given. It's safe to say I won't be gracing the country with my presence.

How far do you guys think $40,000 would get me?! That's $2700 a month...

yeah i realised I was looking at the semi-monthly paycheck on the salary calculator. I edited it.
There would be no relocation package.

Hate to be negative, but straight into the poor house, as you smartly deduced! There is no way you could support yourself on that salary. It would barely play for a nice apartment in a decent area.

Sorry it ddi not work out for you. Your boss is not being at all realistic.

Perhaps they have changed their mind and this is a get out?

Thank you, this makes me feel like I'm being reasonable here. I don't know what they're thinking...

I almost wish that was the case but I don't think it is.

Not wanting to sound too critical of your sister and her partner, but it sounds as though they didn't do much research into this idea before presenting it to you. At the very least they should have developed a properly researched and costed business plan for expansion into a new country. A core component of that plan should have been the cost of relocating you and paying you a salary comensurate with industry standards, cost of living and the responsibilities of your role.

It sounds as though they're just telling you to 'go forth and multiply'! Sorry, but I wouldn't touch the job with a barge pole.

Good call.

Though to be fair, that is exactly the kind of shitty deal US employers put forward all the time. So it's kinda-sorta culturally appropriate

Wow.... something tells me that that isn't anywhere near prevailing wage anyway.

Wonder if they just converted your salary in sterling into dollars and then thought chucking in a company car would be enough as a sweetener.

Totally naive on their part.

+1. But even if they converted the salary, this sounds like they want him to essentially go and be a Managing Director/CEO of the company in the US - no way that salary is suitable for that level of job!

As above OP, I can't see how you'd even get a visa on that wage, it's far too low. It would be low even with a relocation package, and a good medical/dental package. Go back to your sister and suggest she does some research on comparable salaries and the cost of living in the US, and then comes back to you with a more realistic figure.
