What does (sp) mean?...............spelling
and why when I read the news paper over here are so may word in ()?

Just to take it a little out of context I suppose is the reason for these 0--->
() and yes SP is for spelling

As others have confirmed, (sp) is for spelling if someone's unsure of spelling. The brackets (I usually see [] rather than ()) I take to mean they've edited the text and put in a filler word that makes two phrases work.
