What Do I Do with a Summer Sausage?

I was in an outdoorsy type store yesterday and made an impulse purchase of elk
"summer sausage"

Does anyone know how one eats this type of sausage? It looks like salami. Do I treat it that way? I don't have to heat it up to eat it, do I?

Also, if there's summer sausage, is there winter sausage too?

Yeah, but then it might get moved to the Lounge by an over-zealous mod...

...perhaps not in this case. :D

Was that to go with your other impulse buy, the stiletto desert boots? :D

In all seriousness in answer to the OP-

no, you don't have to cook it or heat it. Think of it like a relative of pepperoni. Slice some off and eat with a bit of cheese on crackers.

Summer sausage is always better. You may experience significant shrinkage with winter sausage

Tastes great with som strong Irish cheddar and some quality crackers. Add a bottle of wine to the mix, and it's the perfect afternoon snack while sitting out in the sun.

The sausage is very much dead. The legs weren't attached. Neither was the head. It was shrink wrapped too.

The lady behind me in the line saw me holding the sausage and asked if I'd had it before... :)
