I want instant custard because I am now a lazy American. Better still canned or boxed custard. Strawberry or chocolate custard is also welcome.

Talking of custard, egg custard tarts and Rhubarb and Custard sweets.

I just want reasonably priced English food, I won't pay $5 for a can of beans or $13 for a bottle of Ribena. My wife is quite willing to pay it when I'm not looking.

So quick tip for half decent mushy peas (for lazy people). Get Campbells condensed pea soup and mix with a garden peas. 50/50 mix works. Microwave for a minute to cook, stir, job done. If you want that fish and chip shop taste add a touch of vinegar.
Its a bit sweet if you don't add the vinegar. Check the peas haven't had sugar or sweetener added in the tin too!

I'd like to see Pies – Pieminister, as well as decent bangers, otherwise the food is pretty good.

Have to hit the farmers markets to get nice strawberries in season though, thankfully with the CA drought it seems many things like tomatoes have gotten smaller, but more tasty!

Looking over the previous posts, in the SF Bay Area I've bought the following in stores:

Smarties
Birds custard
Decent cheddar cheese
Yorkshire Tea
Polos

I see most all of those things here as I live in a very high concentrated area of Irish legal and illegal immigrants. The butcher is Irish and all the shops sell British and/or Irish products, breads, chocolate, bistro , birds custard, Jaffa cakes, black pudding, Irish bacon, Heinz beans and salad creams, mushy peas, Red Rose tea, Barry's tea, to name a few.

How about smoked haddock or kippers?

Loved the quip about the Yorkshire tea plantations.

We have often found British products in little Indian/Eastern food shops where you can also stock up on their bulk spices which are otherwise hard to find. They also have really good prices. Always seem to have Quality Street chocs which I remember from childhood.

Local "British" restaurants here in Columbia serve 'mushy' peas but it is only garden peas pureed with added cream. They don't actually taste good.
Best is to soak dried peas overnight and then simmer with tsp sugar and a little salt until tender. Can do a big batch and freeze into meal sized portions. I add mint sauce too. The real deal.

Following my most recent trip to the UK earlier this month I have the market cornered for Lancashire style black peas for next Bonfire Night

Please spill the peas (sorry!). I'm a Lancashire lass and remember these as a kid, sold at Preston market by the hot chestnut man. Would love to know what they are, how to make them.
You could email me as I think this is not of interest to everyone (but could be mistaken in that). Have not yet figured out how to do email link.

Mrs Q is only Lancastrian by adoption....
She draws the line at the other ethnic foods, as she calls them, like Bury black pudding :-(
