Hey everybody I just got in now after a pretty hecrtic 24h.

Well today was a classic example of the value of the second opinion. I was diagnosed (with confidence) with a much less serious/progressive problem. Basically, I have a small "rip" (an "RPE rip" to be exact) in my retina and that is it!!!!!!! They are VERY rare and are usually a result of some trauma but in my case is probably a combination of high myopia and some trauma. It is unlikely to get any worse and there is no need for any further action at the moment. I am very lucky because when these happen, they usually occur right in the middle of the retina (the fovea) and you lose sharp central vision. The retina specialist I saw is supposed to be one of the best in the country and he certainly ran a professional shop. I was very impressed and he was very confident in what he saw and explained how it can be mistaken for the more serious condition that I was originally diagnosed with. I dont feel angry with the other guy becasue he actually hinted at this but I just dont think he had the confidence to go with it and wanted to avoid a law suit by diagnosing the worse possible condition that I could have had.

However, I am very relieved right now and feel a lot more confident in my diagnosis. I will have to just monitor it carefully and hopefully it will be fine. i really hope that very few people on here have problems with their retinas because it is a SCARY SCARY thing and usually damage is completely irreversible.

On a seperate note though, I was impressed with Houston. It had a cool feel to it and was a little more cosmopolitan than I expected. I spent a shit load of money in the Galleria too!! The Armani store (NOT exchange!) killed me!

Thanks again for all your kind words and advice!

There are a couple of stores in the Galleria I like. I do visit Houston from time to time for things I can't get here.

Glad to hear that you've "only" got a retinal tear, the tear you describe in the fovea is exactly what happened to my mother -- four days after my first daughter (her first grandchild) was born. No trauma -- it just happened. Life changes overnight. The experimental treatment is vitrectomy with a bit of laser to "tack" the retina back down and then an air bubble to pressurise the retina back against the lining of the eye. It worked fairly well but you have to lie face down for weeks and .... oh God, what a horrible experience.

When you start hitting your mid-forties I'd have them take a look at it again because the vitreous starts to separate from the retina as you age and it can pull on the retina as it does so.

Great news, far better than your original dx.

Er that is a retina detachment, far worse and will leave you totally blind if not treated very quickly! As for vitreous detachment, that has already happened in my eyes and I have PVD (posterior vitreous detachment) in both. This is common in people with higher myopia (and is a normal part of ageing) and puts us at risk for all kinds of retina related problems including detachments, tears, bleeds much earlier than normal people.

Its all fun, fun, fun!

That's great news Dukey. Glad you had a top-notch specialist within driving distance. That Galleria shopping trip sounded like fun - no trouble with your eyes there then?

Line (or maybe even title) from a popular country song.

Something about going honky-tonking.
