I opened a Wells fargo account in London a couple of months before coming over. They just need proof of ID (all scanned and emailed to them), did it to our London address at the time, and I just updated the address online once we had one here.
Mine was an IPB (Internation personal banking), and the guy even came to my office to go through the paperwork (completely unnecessary, I think he just wanted to get out the office

It's listed as a 'Custom Management' account in online banking, I've found it all very easy (except the 1st year restrictions they subject you too, $1500 daily limit, low credit card limit etc, but that's going to happen when no ones knows who you are).
