Not sure what tips you're looking for... What has your research into this so far turned up? That might be a good place to start this discussion.

I think the OP means he's not sure he can hire a car with a debit card.

Some allow debit cards when shown in conjunction with a roundtrip international air ticket, but generally if all you have is a debit you may have to put up a substantial cash deposit before your rental.

Avis, Alamo, Hertz, National, Enterprise, Thrifty, etc. They're all fully represented in the DC area and at the airports. I'd suggest contacting them or googling to see if it can be done.

CarHire3000 in the UK. You can pay by UK debit card then get voucher for the airport in DC with most major US car hire companies and its a good price. All done over the internet.highly recommended.Once they have your payment they e-mail your car voucher for Alamo/Dollar or whoever. You also put your DL details on application and its quicker at the US airport. Take a look, it can still be done in your time limit.

I was just trying to find out if he'd lifted a finger to help himself first.

In Washington we now have zipcars.com check out their site - then you can just take the car for a few hours when you need it rather than for the whole time you're here

Zipcar is great for students at my University as the $50 annual membership charge is halved. You need to apply in advance, and if you have a British driving license you have to make a call/send an email to the DVLA apparently. Loads of Zipcars parked outside Metro stations in DC, VA, & MD. You'd need to contact them to find out if you can sign up with a debit card Email: [email protected]
Phone: 866.4ZIPCAR (866.494.7227).
