Keep an eye on the price over labor day weekend. By bringing your receipt to Sears you can get the price you paid matched with the reduced price (although it sounds like you got a good deal).

Don't be tempted by sexy electronic features. They even have washers with WiFi now.

Stick with a basic model. You'll save a ton of money and it will prove much more reliable.

The big box stores like Lowes, Home Depot, Best Buy etc will have some good deals. You might also be able to work out a free installation.

We went with a front loader as we felt it could fit more and it had a higher spin cycle, which made clothes a bit dryer before throwing them in the dryer (thus saving some electricity).

And just because we're talking about dryers, I thought I'd share this:

Be aware that "installation" of a clothes dryer doesn't just mean "take out of packaging, plug in, and connect to the vent."

US clothes dryes are supplied without power cords, and you have to make sure that you have one with the correct sort of plug - three pin or four pin. If your home was built since 1993-4 you should need a four pin (that is when the electrical code changed), but it is possible that a three pin was retro-fitted as people often do that to make their "old" dryer work in their "new" home. .... And three pin sockets are still available today, so presumably it is still going on today, when the correct approach is to upgrade the power cord to a four pin plug - the difference is that three pin power cords don't have a dedicated earth wire, making do instead with a shared earth-neutral.

In fact, connecting the power cord to the dryer is quite straight forward, but you need to be confortable with some very basic electrical work - correctly matching the colors on wires to be connected to those in the back of the dryer, and installing the protective "strain relief" (collar) where the cord passes through the metal body of the dryer, which is a bit fiddly.
