Thumbs up W-2 Time!

For those working legally in the US, just a heads up that you should be receiving your W-2 this month for fiscal year 2004...

I just received mine. My spouse received his last week.

I dunno. For the last six fiscal years, my spouse's employer has been filing our taxes on our behalf!

Which do you recommend?

They're both pretty good, actually -- apart from the friggin' adverts in them. First time I ever did it in the States, I did it manually -- big mistake! The few bucks spent on the proggy is a v. good investment.

Is it a good idea to have your spouse's employer filing your tax returns? Unless he works for accountants, of course.

The employer has Price Waterhouse Coopers and accountants like that do the taxes.

This was pretty handy 'cos the taxes started off very complicated, e.g. filing in the UK and US (OH, PA, VA and Federal) in 1998. Has got increasingly more straightfoward though.

As long as it wasn't Ar-fur Anderson!

The US tax code has to be the most complicated system ever to evolve. I love the deductions you can make over here, just hate the complication of it all. Hear Bush has a task force working on uncomplicating it all -- a good idea, but if it is like any other of the policies of this administration, it will end up as an underhand method to reward the faithful and be no great leap forward. I'm not holding my breath...

Just curious if Turbo Tax has any clue on international things. I mean I read on the IRS website that because we came into the country January 21st that we have to file a form for the other 21 days being out of the country. Does Turbo Tax understand that? Will probably go and buy the program, I've done it myself (or had someone else do it) in previous years....but this is our first year here and I think we might actually get some money back....want to make sure we dot all of our i's and t's.

This question comes up here. Think you will find the arrivng-in-US-midyear problem is probably beyond the full abilities of these programs.

I got my W2s for my savings and investments the other day. I'll be happily passing it all over to Mr Sibsie to plough through.

Am I correct in thinking all W-2s need to be received by the end of this month? I thought that was the thing years ago, but its been awhile and we're waiting for two to arrive and here it is the end of January and nothing as yet. Talk about waiting till the last minute....come on already!

It's my understanding that employers should be mailing/providing W-2s to employees during the month of January.

Getting my W-2 now is far earlier than this time last year when I got it in the first week of February
