I have used both tunnelbear and hola vpn and it works fine watching on the computer, if I put it on the 55 inch tv it goes all laggy and grainy. Fast moving sports seem to be much worse than normal tv or films.
How can I make the picture clearer, is it the fault of the vpn I'm using?

Are you connecting through an HDMI lead or any other third party device? The problem is probably there.

yes, been doing it wifi.
Have to unless you can buy get a 30ft Ethernet cable.
Guess I ll start looking to see if theres such a thing

Are you going direct from the router to the TV, or sharing another computers (like a laptop) screen with the TV, if the later, then you maybe are double dipping your wifi bandwidth.

Yes, my wife has her computer hard wired to the router and I was just using wifi in another room to watch tv. so, I guess I am double dipping. Ijust saw walmart does a 50ft Ethernet cable, $15 all in so this should help? my hdmi cable is pretty good, should be cost me £35 in the uk.

The issue appears determined by the quality of the broadcast being put through it. Your picture source, is standard def, combined with flaky VPN throughput results in the experience you're seeing.

How to fix this? Improve your VPN connection.

Basically you want to look at every link in the chain, and try to speed up those that you can.

Switching from ethernet to wifi should improve things a bit.
What speed do you have from your ISP? Is there a tier higher that might help?
Is your computer attached to the TV have a fast enough video card? HDMI cables might be better, but if it is an old computer and a new say 4k TV don't expect great performance.

Have you considered switching from a VPN to something like SmartDNS? Smart DNS (and other names) are for DNS redirection services, sending those packets that are 'checked' through servers in the UK and sending other packets direct from the fastest available route. I like and recommend Overplay.net but there are others like UnoTelly and I think SmartDNS that have similar services. I find it considerably faster than a VPN, which routes 100% of the packets through the UK before coming to you. I've watched hours on end of Sky Sports via SmartDNS with minimal lag or buffering. I also watched England's first WC match on BBC 1 without any lag issues.

My laptop is 2.40gh 64 bit, I use brighthouse and get 28-30 mbps. I have run the speed test many times all different times of the day. I use a plasma 55 inch tv which is 1 1/2 old. Don't no what video card it is.
Don't know what smart dns is but I'll look at it now.

I've found DNS provides a far better service than a VPN.ni switched to UnoTelly about 2 months ago and have never had a problem, although my tv is only 46 inches LOL.
