Any idea who i should contact in the UK to register to be able to vote in the next general election?

Yes, contact the local council of your last known address in the UK.
They will send you a vote by post/vote by proxy form to fill out.

You should contact the British borough where you last lived and paid property tax and ask for the paperwork to register as an overseas voter. I did that recently and the London Borough of Camden sent me the appropriate forms in the mail.

Part of the form asks for a countersignature from a British person in the country which you reside.

The form I got was not very simple at all. It had to be signed by a UK citizen who holds a UK passport and is not living in the UK. It's stupid!

I agree. What if you end up in a small town where you're the only British expat? Fortunately, I happen to know another Brit here in Hilton Head, and am now registered to vote, but that was pure luck.
