Default Voluntary NI Contributions eligibility & BREXIT

Hi all,

I have done a bit of research on gov.uk but a few questions remain :

Here is my situation :

- I am a British citizen with Permanent US residency
- Born in 1975
- I worked every year, for 16 years, in the UK and made NI contributions
- I was never self-employed (always worked for an employer)
- I then quit my UK job, sold everything and moved to the USA
- I then started a new job with a US company (they also have offices in the UK)
- 3 and 1/2 years have passed since I moved to the USA
- I am unsure if I will be returning to live & work in the UK

Here are my questions :
1. Am I eligible to make NI contributions?
2. And if Yes, would it be Class 2 or Class 3 ?
3. And if Yes, should I be completing form CF83 ?
4. Do you think there is a UK state pension shake up coming as a result of BREXIT?

Ray

Based on what you write above, yes.

2. And if Yes, would it be Class 2 or Class 3 ?
Class 2, but they are being abolished in 2018. It's unclear what ex-pats will end up paying at present - most likely we'll get switched to Class 3.

3. And if Yes, should I be completing form CF83 ?
Yes.

Who knows? That will depend on what the long-term effects of Brexit on the economy turn out to be. Personally, I think they'll be devastating, but that's just me listening to "experts". Class 2s are so cheap though that it's a bit of a no brainer while they're still available, and you can back-pay them for up to six years, so you'd be able to cover all the time you've been in the US to date.

What Rpjs said, except I think the impact of Brexit will be positive or only slightly negative.

Especially when one considers that the OP won't be eligible to draw a pension for (currently) nearly 30 years!!! Heck, the UK could well be the 52nd state by then!!!
