Thumbs down VIEWING UK TV on PC in USA

Does anyone know if or when there will be a way to view UK TV on our PC's here in USA? Apparently such viewing is restricted to those connected via a UK ISP. One comment I read ages ago was it was because of the bandwith/distance and it would cause problems.

The reason you can't watch UK stuff in the US is copyright. There aren't really any legal ways to do it but theres several illegal ways such as torrents or Proxys.

I think the UK is missing a great revenue opportunity -- I'd gladly pay a TV license fee here to view UK TV!

Indeed it is frustrating that we don't get access, even when we're willing to pay.
The Beeb have a site where you can register your interest;

https://iplayer.bbcworldwide.com/

But so far they have only launched ipad solutions and then they are supposedly only offering back catalogue content rather than true iplayer style access.

Netflix has started offering some BBC content too, such as Merlin, Sherlock and Being Human.

In the meantime I use StrongVPN which costs $60 per year so my computers can 'appear' to be in the UK. Didn't have much luck getting Downton off ITV though.

I use FreeVPN, which is free (as its name cunningly alludes to).

Thanks but not sure how VPN works? I googled and found this article but it doesn't say how to use it for viewing TV in UK where it must be from a UK ISP? http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2390381,00.asp

Ooops, just found this: http://www.*****************/faqs/

Again, it refers to iPlayer but that's not available in USA.

Anyone know anything about it?

Have a search, there's a nut sack full of threads on how to do this, using VPN's and proxies, from paid to free.

Ex-pat Shield/Liberty Hero/Tunnel Bear/Stealth plugin are the best of the free options.

The nature of a VPN/Proxy that is based in the UK is that if gives you a UK IP, so you appear to be in the UK, so when you go to iPlayer, 4OD and all the rest, you can just stream the content.

The quality tends to depend on the bandwidth, which is why paid services tend to be better.

iPlayer only checks on connection though, so you can use a free VPN to connect and once it has buffered a bit, disconnect the VPN and get your full internet speed. Doesn't tend to work so great with live feeds, no idea about the other channels.

Is that the kind of language to use in front of a granny?

ibVPN is my VPN service of choice, $20 for 6 months and works with all the UK catchup TV services. Watch BBC live and stream BBC radio love too, no problems.

The free Tunnelbear lasts about 5 minutes, not worth it. I upgraded to paying $5 a month for unlimited viewing on BBC iplayer and love it.
