Default View PAL VHS in the USA

I have PAL-B (British) VHS tapes. Can I view them on NTSC or PAL TV ?

The regular stores don't sell PAL compatible VCRs and I am not very comfortable with mail orders.

Any suggestions/ideas ?

Actually, the UK standard is PAL-I, not PAL-B.

Oh, and you'd better get comfortable with mail order.

Just go buy yourself a multi format VCR player.
We have been using one for about 4 years without any problems.

If your really having difficulty finding one then drop me a line and I will dig one up for you.

LAst time I checked they were about $350

I need one of these so I called the company, however they told me that the Hitachi VT-P98 doesn't play UK VHS tapes on US televisions. They recommend the Samsung SV-5000W which can play any VHS tape on any TV set, it retails for $309.

You will not only need a multi system player but most likely a converter for the TV. Some players have converters built in.

I've used this website a couple of times and not had a problem, but the price seems about the same - $335.

convertors...

http://www.threedoubleyou.com/converters.htm

That's pretty good site, there pretty helpful to when I emailed them asking about what I needed and explained the problem, they told me what the pros' and con's were to each thingy and in the end, suggested I not bother with it as would be cheaper getting a new dvd player at the time

If anyone is interested in a PAL compatible DVD player (built in converter - will play any format DVD on any tv), look no further than the Philips 642 for around $70. Only a handful of DVD players in the states have a built in PAL to NTSC converter but this one does and it's cheap. Certainly can save yourself a few $$ rather than buying one online that has been customised.

I have one of these Samsung SV-5000W. It is a great video player and recorder. I send videos back to my UK family of our family video every year, and use this to record. It will read/record various PAL formats, NTSC, and SECAM (View only, not record), so, it has been very useful for us.

Good luck. Colin.
