Default Very interesting site

Stumbled across this one:

www.nationmaster.com. It gives every fact, stat, figure and whatever for every country. Hers an interesting comparison:

UK
Consultation with doctors: 4.9 per person per year
Death from cancer: 253.5 deaths per 100000 people

USA
Consultation with doctors: 8.9 per person per year
Death from cancer: 321.9 deaths per 100000 people

We have half the doctors consultations in the UK yet only 3/4 the deaths from cancer the USA has.

You need to compare lifespans as well. Younger people who die from something else (accidents, suicides, AIDs, etc.), don't live long enough to develop cancer. Also rates in the UK may be higher for accidents, suicides, strokes, heart attacks, etc., again leading to fewer cancer deaths. Or maybe not. In any case, the stats you presented are meaningless without supporting data.

Fair comment about the stats - normally the case.

Wonder why, with access to free doctors, the visit per year number is almost half in the UK versus the US? Harder to get to see one in the UK? Healthier people in the UK? More "quit-whining-and-pack-your-schoolbag" mums in the UK

I pulled up the table for the top 20 countries with the highest level of personal income tax. Makes for interesting reading...

Hours I'm going to spend on that site. Hours. And I don't even give a rat's testicle about stats!

Yes, wish Belgium could be number one in the world for something else. Income tax in just the start, once you add in VAT at 21%, Petrol Tax etc etc etc it's horrendous

Take anything on this site with a grain of salt.

Reading through murder stats will give you a clue as to why I say so.

I think it's probably because of the fact that you are less likely to get an answer from your GP over here, and more likely to get referred to a specialist, thereby making it two consultations instead of one. I doubt whether people are more likely to go to the doctor, it's just that once they've been, they're more likely to have to have a second visit, if you see what I mean.

Americans go to the docs so much because they believe in the wonder pills they see on TV....and its easier to see a doc because he makes more money out of you.....

In the UK you could die before seeing a doc.......my mum had to wait a week or more most of the time......so give up going.......
